Kampala – Former BBC broadcaster Alan Kasujja has officially assumed office as the new Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre (UMC), marking a significant leadership transition at the government’s key communications agency.
Kasujja takes over from Obed Katureebe, who had been serving in an acting capacity since April 25, 2025, following the resignation of long-serving Executive Director Ofwono Opondo, who stepped down to pursue elective politics ahead of the 2026 general elections.
During the official handover ceremony, Kasujja announced ambitious plans to revamp government communication, starting with a comprehensive retraining programme for all government communication officers across the country.
He emphasized the need to shift towards more development-oriented communication that clearly articulates government programmes and priorities while highlighting economic opportunities available to ordinary citizens.
“We must move away from business as usual,” Kasujja said, pledging to build a more robust, professional, and effective communication machinery that supports Uganda’s ambitious growth agenda.
The new Executive Director promised sweeping reforms, including strengthening infrastructure at the Media Centre, improving timely dissemination of information, and equipping spokespersons with modern skills to effectively engage the public and media.
Kasujja, a highly experienced journalist who spent over a decade with the BBC before returning to Uganda, brings a wealth of international broadcasting expertise to the role. His appointment was directed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni late last year.
Obed Katureebe, who steered the Centre in an acting role for nearly a year, was commended for his service during the transition period.
The Uganda Media Centre plays a central role in coordinating and disseminating government policies, programmes, and responses to national issues.
Kasujja’s leadership is expected to usher in a new era of proactive, citizen-focused government communication as the country prepares for the 2026/2027 financial year and beyond.
